So I watched this documentary on Amazon and it was very, very interesting.

First of all, it takes a very dim view of John K, the genius, but ultimately flawed creator of R&S.  A lot of the interviews are from people with a definite axe to grind against him.

I didn't like that approach, so I was kind of against the film in that way, as I tended to take John's side.

The basic gist of R&S is that John K is in fact a genius and brilliant artist.  Like all genius brilliant artists, he is a massive prick.  But being a prick when you're driving towards what can only be described as art is not a character flaw.  It's almost a requirement.  No Pricks, No Apple, No Smartphones.  He founded the Spumco company and surrounded himself with hand-picked artists of the highest calibur.  He pitched a bunch of things to Nickelodeon and they were the ones who picked out R&S, who at the time were just the dog and cat for another character in the pantheon of stories he presented.  Once Nick picked R&S for development, it was off to the races.

R&S exploded onto the staid, dead world of animation in the early 90's like a fucking atom bomb.  Every other animated show that followed, followed because of R&S.  They truly blew the doors open with that spectacular 1st and 2nd seasons.

But like anything that does that (COUGH Rick and Morty COUGH), it just becomes impossible to sustain.

Nick, like any other corporation, just ordered more than these artists could produce.  It's akin to having Michelangelo complete the Sistine Chapel and the patrons going, "Hey that's great! Can you create 20 more Sistine Chapels in half the time?".

That's just the nature of Corporations, so what can you do?

The crash was inevitable, and ugly.

John K was fired for telling an oddly mannish woman executive to go fuck herself and not being able to deliver genius works of art on a corporate time schedule.

The Spumco group of artists disintegrated and went on to other projects.

Bob Camp milked the corpse of R&S for a few more years, but season 3 was a disaster (COUGH Rick and Morty COUGH) and just got worse from there.

It's also clear John K suffered a nervous breakdown of sorts, as he began the process of grooming teenage girls for sex.  It's extraordinarily luriid and while he's nobody's rapist (Crimony, he actually MET WITH THE PARENTS OF ONE GIRL WHO SENT HER TO LIVE WITH HIM AT 16) it's also jaw-droppingly creepy.  But he didnt' torture children or drink adrenochrome, so score one for John for only being a filthy old man.

I think it was in poor taste to interview the groomed girl (door swings both ways, kid) for the film, as it, plus the interviews with most of John K's 'enemies' gives the entire film a hit-piece feel, which is unfortunate.

Naturally having suffered the R&S loss, John K never got close again to that peak, which very few artists like that ever do.  He redefined animation and comedy and created 2 years of some of the best entertainment to ever exist.

For proof of that I give you "Stimpy's Fan Club".  Nothing approaches that, even R&M's "Auto-Erotic Assimilatiion".

And there's this latest example of why Hollywood is doomed:

"The ViacomCBS-owned network is hiring a new creative team for a "reimagined take" on the legendary Nickelodeon animated series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The New York Post adds that Billy West, the voice of Stimpy and of Ren (for three seasons) is expected to return for the revival, along with several of the original writers.

However, the show's original creator John Kricfalusi, who was accused of sexual misconduct in 2018, will not be involved in the project."

Oh, so 'sexual misconduct' is suddenly a disqualifier?

Boy, don't let them know about Bryan Singer or anything.
