So the Canon Cripple Hammer seems once again destined to drive pros away from their new cameras as nightmare tales of overheating on the brand new R5/R6 models are rampant online.

So much so the Andrew Reid, a long time popular canon user (eoshd.com) has called for an investigation into Canon, and demanded a recall.

That's because once the camera over-heats (even when it's not hot), it takes hours to reset.  More then that, some cameras have reportedly over-heated while simply jogging through the menus.  One guy put his camera into a fridge and took 60 pictures... where it too promptly over-heated.

Another guy claims that Canon has done a secret recall of the R5 - devastating if true.

Canon remains the biggest camera company in the world, primarily because they are user friendly, have a huge selection of lenses, and generally speaking look good right out of camera.  But pros - particularly video pros - are likely going to sit on the sidelines until this is sorted out.

What's really weird is that literally no one wants 8K.  Heck, lots of people still shoot in 1080.  Likely that none of these over-heating problems would exist if it was simply a 4K camera.  Oh well....

And Canon just released a new firmware for the R6, despite most pre-orders not even shipped.

The firmware adds a whooping 5 minutes to record times - that's it.  This is rapidly becoming a marketing nightmare for Canon who would otherwise be selling these things like hot cakes as they are superior in IQ to the new Sony A7sIII (which still has those awful menus & inferior color science).

But at least Sony hasn't crippled their flagship mirrorless video SLR unlike Canon.

Not addressed by any of the people who got the firmware advance copy is whether or not the new firmware will wreck the battery removal work-around developed by the tiny minority of users who might want to use their new $4000 camera (plus lens costs) for more then 15 minutes before shutting down for 2 hours.

If they have, the already really bad fuck up will be made infinitely worse.  Word on the street is that Canon has already pulled all their units from warehouses to flash the firmware - there's already now a 1 month delay on delivery for the R6, even if you pre-ordered months ago.

All & all, an utter, completely avoidable, disaster for Canon.

WOW!  5 whole extra minutes?  Totally worth the upgrade
