Happy Thanksgiving!

2019 & early 2020 saw a revival of sort of the murder-mystery, with KNIVES OUT, FANTASY ISLAND, MURDER MYSTERY, INVISIBLE MAN, and READY OR NOT all coming out.  Another Agatha Christie movie be come later this year, Ken Branaugh's MURDER ON THE NILE.

But so far, it's READY OR NOT that has claimed best of the bunch title.

Samara Weaving (Hugo Weaving's niece) is just great in this movie.  She has the incredibly rare combination of being Barbie girl hot while still somehow being likeable.  That she's also willing to take a beating (and boy howdy does she do that) certainly helps too.

The movie itself is wonderfully shot, and has all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a studio film (albeit a low budget one, $6 million).  The rest of the cast is excellent in their roles, and the direction and pacing is snappy.  The violence is realistic and there's quite a bit of it.

But other then Weaving, who's going to be a star, it's the script that stands out.  Unlike some other films which have pointed fingers at the ultra rich (INVISIBLE MAN, GET OUT, and KNIFE'S OUT come to mind), the near-constant jokes make the social commentary aspects of the film far more enjoyable.  Black humor perhaps the hardest of all to pull off, and director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (SOUTHBOUND, VHS) does it with aplomb, never letting the script's commentary stop the movie from being entertaining.  Sure, I predicted what would happen about half way through the movie, but I have the Shine.  It also didn't stop me from enjoying the film.

While there's a couple of plot holes, there's nowhere near as many of them as in INVISIBLE MAN or GET OUT, nor are they as big.  A very good date movie, check it out when you've got to make that movie suggestion this Saturday night.

BOTTOM LINE: 3.5 "Samara Weaving makes it easy to watch a murder mystery movie" out of 5

I like this movie but I would have had more respect for it if she had executed the kid. Three out of five
