The Battle of Midway was the most important the US fought in WWII.  If we had lost, the Japanese may well have won the war.

And we should have lost - the Japs had vast advantages in ships, planes, pilots, and practice using all of them.  Bull Halsey (ably played by Dennis Quaid), the US's best naval officer, forced out of the battle with shingles.  And of course the Japanese were flush with victory thanks to their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor (which this movie also shows).

Yet somehow, we won the battle.  And this film does a great job of explaining it while still being a popcorn chomping spectacle.  Featuring a great cast - Quiad, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Woody Harleson, and newcomer Ed Skrein (who's great) - MIDWAY barrels along, never bogging down or ever feeling slow.  Frankly, the movie could have been a half hour longer and I would have been fine with it.

The film - like other Roland Emmerich efforts like INDEPENDENCE DAY - is refreshingly pro-American and it's willing to show just how bad-ass and scary the Japs really were.  The costumes, sets, SFX, sound - they're all top notch.

Simply put, it's much better then "1917" which got more attention.  The scope - it shows Pearl Harbor, the Coral Sea battle, the Doolittle Raid, and Midway - far greater then any other movie on the subject, and it handles it better.

The only thing that's not great - and it does hurt the film - is the music, which is fairly pedistrian.  Not horrible, but certainly not great, this movie was dying to have James Horner or John Williams draw up the tunes.  Sadly, they're not available.

Regardless, it's a great WWII flick, one rotten tomatoes gives 48% while real people on cinemascore gave it an "A" exit score.  Suffice it to say that the cinemascore is right, and RT is wrong.  It'll be fun to watch this July4th on the big screen.  Until then, give it a watch on the biggest set you have.

BOTTOM LINE:  4 "best movie of 2019" out of 5 stars

With pilots with names like Richard "Dick" Best, maybe it's no surprise that we won....

Single biggest deciding factor: US ships had firefighting equipment, and the Japanese ships did not.

That in and of itself is a fascinating story.

And I really want to see this movie, thanks for the recommendation.

I wouldn't say it was the biggest factor - that was prolly cracking the Jap codes and having the balls to go out to Midway in the first place.

But yeah, their lack of fire control meant their flat-tops had zero chance of recovery once hit.  Whether or not it would have made a difference is hard to say - the hits might have been fatal regardless.

It certainly made a difference for us, as the Yorktown should have sunk after the battle of the Coral Sea.  As is was, it actually fought at Midway.  All this just makes me want to watch it again....
