Dorothy Catherine Fontana, the Star Trek story editor and writer died on December 2 at age 80 from an undisclosed illness. Thinking that more of her scripts would get accepted if she used her gender neutral first initials, she went by "D.C" for most of her career. Her entry into science fiction writing was a mix of dedication and good fortune. She just happened to get a gig as Gene Roddenberry's secretary when his had to quit due to illness. Before meeting The Great Bird of the Galaxy she was primarily interested in writing westerns. Luckily for her, Roddenberry saw Star Trek as a "Wagon Train to the Stars."

She was the only writer to work on TOS, TAS, TNG, and DS9 (the last good Star Trek show). She also wrote episodes of Babylon 5, the fan series Star Trek: New Voyages, as well as many other TV series such as Earth: Final Conflict and Logan's Run (for which she was also story editor). She was the creator of Spock's Vulcan father Sarek and is responsible for much of Spock's backstory. In all she wrote or co-wrote 11 of the original series episodes. She was also one of the first writers of Star Trek fanzines.

“You can't say, I won't write today because that excuse will extend into several days, then several months, then... you are not a writer anymore, just someone who dreams about being a writer.”  - Dorothy C. Fontana

That's a dang shame.  She also helped steer other writers in the original series, and in a general sense kept the wild Roddenberry a bit more grounded.  At the age of 27, Fontana became the youngest story editor in Hollywood at the time, and also one of the few female staff writers.

Her importance to the series - and thus all of scifi - is immense.  She wrote the second TREK ep ever to air, CHARLIE X... which George Lucas borrows heavily from (the idea of an evil person using a "force" to destroy a ship).

She did the first re-write of what many people consider the best TREK ep of all time, "City on the Edge of Forever."

Almost of the same importance to the original show, she introduced Roddenberry to Bill Theiss, the costume designer for the original series.

She also wrote the best ep of the original BATTLE STAR GALACTICA, "Gun on Ice Planet Zero."  She wrote an ep of HE-MAN, 2 for BIONIC MAN, 1 for LAND OF THE LOST, 1 for KUNG FU - in other words, literally just about every show we grew up watching.

She had a bit of a Detroit connection too, as she was married to DP/SPX master Dennis Skotak (who did the SFX for TERMINATOR 2).

Rest in peace.

So.... this is kinda weird.....

"'Star Trek' actor Robert Walker Jr. dead at 79

Robert Walker Jr., best known for a classic early Star Trek episode and as the son of Hollywood stars Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones, died Thursday in Malibu, according to family members. He was 79.

The New York native portrayed the twitchy, callow title character in “Charlie X,” the second episode of Star Trek’s pioneering first season in 1966, and also handled the title role of the notable 1960s feature films Ensign Pulver and Young Billy Young."

I directly referenced "Charlie X" in the video I put up yesterday, including a picture of Walker.  I gots the "shine" as they say.
