So where does the power come from?

« on: December 13, 2018, 12:49:33 AM »

MI: FALLOUT somehow manages to up the ante from the last film in the series, keeping several long established story threads and characters going while leaping from giant action scene to giant action scene in ways that make sense.

One of my favorite beefs with modern films is that that are almost always too long for the story, at 2 and half hours long, MI FALLOUT almost seems too short.  That's how much action there is.  From St. Thomas Cruise doing an actual HALO jump from 20,000 feet, to one of the best fight scenes in the past 10 years, to helicopter chases, atomic bombs, car chases galore, this movie bristles with varied, believable, action.

While all that action tends to take away from traditional spy movie sneaking around and plot twists, because there's references to at least 2 earlier MI movies & at least a few plot swerves, it still feels like a spy movie.

But make no mistake - this is a rip-roaring action movie, easily one of the best ever made and an instant classic.  For bluray owners, there's a shitload of extras to boot.

And oh yeah, this was the film that kept JUSTICE LEAGUE from shaving Henry Cavil's mustache, which has to be worth at least a half  "fuck you Warner Brothers, I'm Tom Cruise!" star.

BOTTOM LINE: 4 "2nd only to INFINITY WAR in 2018" out of 5 stars

It's the best spy movie I've seen in years. The last one probably being The Man from UNCLE. I was never lost in the film and it didn't go too far with it's sci-fi shenanigans.

So apparently it was Cavill's idea to sport a mustache and five o'clock shadow for this movie. I can see why. It makes him look less like Cruise and facial hair has been a trope for shadiness since the old Westerns and serials. Boy I bet he regrets that.

I'm a big fan of MAN FROM UNCLE (which Cavill is also in).

Boy I bet he regrets that.

How come?  B/C of the subsequent JUSTICE LEAGUE fiasco?  I count that as two studios pissing on each other.  Cavill didn't have to where a green screen on his 'tache or anything, did he?

Cavill cannot be blamed of course because he could not have foreseen WB's mangling of a film he thought he was done with. But it was his decision that ended up costing them millions of dollars. If his character was clean shaven Justice League would be a better looking film. Not his fault but bad things came of it.

While Superman's upper lip was a bit of a distraction, I doubt that could have saved that cinematic trainwreck.

That's an even more damning comment on the "quality" of the film.
