I took up JDV’s suggestion of watching Empire on Xmas Eve. But this time I wanted to try out a new fan edit that just came out this year called "Revisited." If anyone watched Star Wars Revisited when it came out about ten years ago then you know what to expect. The most annoying parts of the Special Edition are removed, with the best being kept in. Every known continuity error or flub is fixed, new CG vfx is added, and Lucasfilm's bad color timing is corrected. The changes the editor (named Adywan) did to Star Wars improved a nearly flawless film. The best part to me was his re-edit of the Obi-Wan/Vader duel. He redid the lightsaber effects, tweaked the edit to make it faster, and added music making it all even more epic than before.

The full list of changes done to the original Star Wars are here:

The recut lightsaber fight from ANH:

His work on Empire is more of the same but even more ambitious. The Battle of Hoth especially gets a huge upgrade. To make the Empire seem more formidable AT-STs and more AT-ATs are added. They also shoot down many more snowspeeders, increasing the carnage.

This was not just some basement dweller adding in crappy CG models, these are pro level vfx and not all of them were done digitally. To correct a continuity problem where Han Solo is wearing his costume from ANH, rather than his Bespin outfit, after he is frozen in carbonite, Adywan had a full scale prop replica made with the correct costume and then filmed it. He used frame interpolation technology to make the jerky stop motion of the tauntauns smoother. Describing all of the changes would take forever so I will just post a link below. Many of them you probably won’t notice unless they are pointed out. One of the most hilarious changes that I noticed was that the Yoda puppet now actually takes a bite of Luke’s rations after he crashes on Dagobah.

You can see how some of the new elements were filmed in behind the scenes pics like the one below.

The guy spent almost ten years on this project so if you want to find a new way to experience the movie I highly recommend the Revisited Cut. Much like Star Wars The Despecialized Edition, he tried to color time the movies to their original theatrical appearance, but he also took artistic liberties to spruce things up if needed. He is now working on a Return of the Jedi edit that will probably take another ten years.

5 fixes outta 5

We caught the special edition one last night (prolly the least annoying version) and having recently dived into actually trying to build and composite models - all with the convenience of modern tech - all I can say it wow.

EMPIRE continues to be as incredible as it was when we were kids.  The Hoth battle in particular is throw down after throw down of great artistry.

That is Spartan law.
