So with this latest role, I will be SAGe, which means I have the option to join the union.
I'm very torn about it. Sure, it has perks like I'll be more accessible to casting directors since they go for the SAG pile of submissions first, I'll get fed on time (which sounds petty but having been on set once where our call time was 5 AM and we weren't fed until 3 PM yet they pulled the SAG people out to make sure they got fed, it's more important than you think!), I'll get paid more for roles, I'll be in a union, etc...
However, it has drawbacks. It's expensive to join, you have to pay dues, it means I can't do indie stuff (which is the bulk of what I do right now) without a shitload of paperwork, etc.
What do you guys think on the whole SAG thing?

You can, but have to fill out a form for it.
Or if you're involved in something BEFORE you join SAG, you can continue doing that project. Like I'll never have to worry about Osiris, since I was doing that beforehand, etc.

Why even give SAG your hard earned money in exchange for such tight restrictions, if it isn't even gonna matter to your career at this stage? The SAG folks I worked with in theater went through the same thing - pay through the nose, and for what? Restrictions when the only roles they were getting were walk-ons and extra parts. F-that noise. They got around it by slightly changing their names (like from Sally Miller to Sally Meyer) and saying "fuck it," and no one in SAG gave two shits as long as they continued to pay their dues.

Well, 30 k's a bit high, but generally I agree - don't do it until you absolutely have to. Once you're in, you're in.
